Altra Superior 7: Coming April 2025

Here’s one I’m always excited about! The Altra Superior has been my go-to Altra trail shoe for years now.

While the Superior 6 had a few volume issues and stiffened up, Altra may be on a path to solve this.

Specifications

  • Release Date: April 2025
  • Price: $120
  • Stack Height: 21mm
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 0mm
  • Weight: 227g (8oz) for US Men’s Size 9
  • Lug Depth: 3mm

Key Features

  • Upper:
The Superior 7 features a lightweight and breathable mesh upper designed to enhance comfort and ventilation during runs. Notably, Altra has transitioned from the previous “burrito-style” tongue to a traditional tongue design, aiming to improve fit and ease of entry. I hope that means more volume!
  • Midsole:
Equipped with Altra’s Quantic™ foam, the midsole offers a responsive and cushioned ride, maintaining a low-to-the-ground feel for better trail connection. The shoe is designed to be more flexible than its predecessor, enhancing adaptability on varied terrains.
  • Outsole:
The MaxTrac™ rubber outsole provides reliable traction on various terrains. Its 3mm lugs are arranged to optimize grip and stability, and additional flex grooves have been incorporated into the outsole to enhance flexibility.
  • GaiterTrap™:
This feature allows for easy attachment of gaiters to keep debris out without additional hardware.
  • StoneGuard™ Omission:
Unlike previous models (Superior 5 and before), the Superior 7 does not include a removable StoneGuard™ rock plate, resulting in a lighter and more flexible shoe.

Conclusion

The Superior will likely be my shoe of choice for dry technical trails where speed is key. With the improved outsole and the enhanced flexibility, I think we’re moving back to a cushioned shoe that could satisfy the barefoot crowd, too.

Altra Olympus 275: Coming July 2025

The Altra Olympus has long been a staple for ultra runners, known for its plush cushioning and vibram stickiness. It’s a go-to for tackling long distances with comfort and confidence.

Will the Olympus 275 differentiate it’s self enough? Maybe.

By shaving off weight, enhancing durability, and adding a modernized upper, this iteration could be the perfect choice for runners looking to boost speed and performance without sacrificing the comfort and protection they’ve come to rely on.

Specifications

  • Release Date: July 2025
  • Price: $185
  • Stack Height: 33mm
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 0mm
  • Weight: Approximately 10–10.5 oz (283–298 grams)

Key Features

  • Upper:
The Olympus 275 introduces a Matrix upper constructed with durable Kevlar threads. This design enhances durability and breathability while reducing weight compared to previous models.
  • Midsole:
The shoe retains the compression-molded EVA foam midsole from the Olympus 6, providing a cushioned and responsive ride suitable for long-distance trail running.
  • Outsole:
Equipped with a Vibram® Megagrip outsole, the Olympus 275 offers the same Olympus 6 traction, ensuring confidence on technical trails.
  • Integrated Gaiter:
A built-in scree gaiter helps prevent debris from entering the shoe, which could provide a compromise between large over-ankle gaiters and lightweight racing options.
  • Weight Reduction:
By updating the strobel layer and upper materials, Altra has reduced the shoe’s weight by approximately 1.5 ounces compared to the Olympus 6, making it lighter and more agile.

Conclusion

Considering we haven’t seen much innovation in the Olympus Trail shoe for a while now, it’s exciting to see Altra attempt to push the boundaries of materials and weight.

Altra Timp 5 BOA: Scheduled for February 2025 Release

When I tried the Timp 5, I felt it was the new Olympus killer. While not everyone liked the fit, this Timp 5 BOA version may change that.

The Timp 5 BOA introduces a more flexible, sock-like upper to increase comfort. Paired with the BOA Fit System, this update promises a locked-in feel that’s easy to adjust on the fly, making it an exciting option for tackling technical trails with confidence and ease.

The shoe utilizes Altra’s EGO™ MAX midsole, which provides a cushioned and responsive ride suitable for various trail conditions.
  • Outsole:
The Vibram® outsole delivers reliable traction across diverse terrains, promoting confidence during technical trail runs.

Conclusion

The Timp 5 is still a solid option for a race-ready technical terrain shoe at a decent price. An enhanced fit and the BOA lockdown could elevate this shoe to a pro-level Timp.

The heel has been split for improved medial-to-lateral stability, enhancing the shoe’s performance on uneven trails.
  • Durability:
Altra has focused on doubling down on durability, making this shoe suitable for ultramarathons and long-distance hikes.

Conclusion

The Altra Lone Peak 9 builds on its legacy as a versatile, durable, and reliable trail shoe.

If you’re starting out with zero-drop trail running shoes, Lone Peak is a great place to start that journey.

Altra Experience Wild 2: Launching May 2025

The 4mm lineup is getting an update.

While it’s not a lineup I’m interested in, I know of some recent converts.

Rumors have it that the original versions were a little….. Immature and cheap. So we’ll see if these updates and PRICE REDUCTIONS help or hinder that fact.

Specifications

  • Release Date: May 1, 2025
  • Price: $140 (reduced from $145)
  • Stack Height: 32mm (heel) | 28mm (forefoot)
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 4mm
  • Weight: 10 oz (283 grams)
  • Lug Depth: 4mm

Key Features

  • Upper:
The Experience Wild 2 features an updated upper for improved durability and breathability. A reinforced toe cap enhances protection, making the shoe suitable for technical terrains. Additional Achilles padding adds to the overall comfort and slip-in feel.
  • Midsole:
Built with Altra’s EGO™ MAX midsole, the shoe provides a soft, responsive ride that is similar to that of the original Experience Wild.
  • Outsole:
The MaxTrac™ outsole ensures reliable traction on technical trails and mixed on-road/off-road environments, catering to runners transitioning to trails.
  • Versatility:
Designed as a hybrid shoe, the Experience Wild 2 is perfect for those exploring trails for the first time or seeking a balanced on-road and off-road option.
  • Price Reduction:
The Experience Wild 2 comes at a reduced price of $140, making it more accessible while retaining its high-quality features.

Conclusion

From what I’ve read, the updates are minor and more of a refinement of the original, which makes sense for a 2nd version. If you’re looking for a road-to-trail option with a little drop. It’s still a solid choice because you still get the toe freedom! 🙂

Altra Experience Flow 2: Launching June 2025

Again, in the 4mm range, we see some innovation in the midsole foam this time.

Altra is using letters and numbers I’ve never seen before, which makes me hope that they’re finally updating their dated foams.

Specifications

  • Release Date: June 2025
  • Price: $140
  • Stack Height: 32mm (heel) | 28mm (forefoot)
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 4mm
  • Weight: 8 oz (approximately 235–240 grams for US Men’s Size 9)

Key Features

  • Midsole:
The Experience Flow 2 introduces an all-new EGO™ P35 midsole compound. Featuring a higher percentage of PU, this compound provides a lightweight, cushioned ride that feels soft underfoot yet remains responsive during runs.
  • Outsole and Fit:
The shoe retains Altra’s signature FootShape™ toe box, allowing natural toe splay and promoting a more comfortable fit. The rocker design in the outsole enhances the shoe’s natural flow, encouraging smooth transitions during runs.
  • Design and Performance:
With its lightweight build and flowing ride, the Experience Flow 2 is ideal for runners seeking a low-drop shoe that combines comfort with speed. Altra describes the feel as cushioned underfoot but fast and responsive in motion.

Conclusion

The big question is how the newer midsole foam holds up and performs. From the stats, it doesn’t seem like a super lightweight foam, so maybe the focus is on feel and durability.

We’ll have to wait until mid-next year to find out.

  1. Hi Nick,
Thanks for the update. I love the Superior, amazing news tough. The updated version seems to be far lighter, too. Can´t wait for April 🙂
    Best regards Wolfgang

  2. Hi Nick,
Only realized now, seems the Superior 7 is cheaper, too. Superior 6 was USD 130 if I´m correct?

    • Oh interesting. No I’ve not heard anything of a new Via Olympus. I could take a guess that they’d bring the new foam design over from the FWD Via to make it lighter though.
