Topo Athletic
All Topo Athletic running shoe reviews — ST-4, ST-5, ST-6, Terraventure. Wide toe box, low drop, tested by a barefoot running specialist.
Foot-Shaped, But Not Quite Barefoot
Topo Athletic occupies an interesting space — foot-shaped shoes with wide toe boxes, but with more structure than the barefoot world typically accepts. They blend foot-shaped fit with drop options ranging from zero (ST series) to 5mm, and most models include arch support. For barefoot runners, that arch support is the sticking point.
I've tested the ST road series and the Terraventure on trail, and the recurring theme is the same: if only Topo would remove the arch support, these could be great shoes.
The Lineup
The ST series is where Topo Athletic gets closest to barefoot. The ST-5 has a genuinely wide toe box — wider than Altra's — with excellent flexibility and a 14mm stack that balances cushion with ground feel. The ST-6 improved the heel fit and dialled back the arch support, but introduced durability concerns with a thinner upper. The ST-4 has a soft, bouncy 16mm stack — a sweet spot for cushion without losing too much ground feedback.
On trail, the Terraventure 4 didn't work for me. At 25mm stack with a stiff midsole and prominent arch support, it killed all ground feel (3/10). The Vibram MegaGrip outsole is excellent, and durability scored 9.5/10, but your foot becomes an inanimate block inside the shoe. I scored it 4.5/10.
The Arch Support Problem
Here's the thing — arch support in a zero-drop shoe contradicts barefoot principles. The whole point of going zero-drop is to let your foot muscles work naturally, and propping up the arch undermines that. It's why barefoot running communities generally view Topo Athletic with caution. The ST-5 and ST-6 work best when used sparingly in rotation with truly minimal shoes, so the arch support effect doesn't accumulate.
Who Topo Athletic Suits
Topo Athletic works as a transition brand for runners moving from conventional shoes toward foot-shaped fit. If you want a wide toe box but aren't ready to give up all cushion and support, the ST series offers a middle ground. It also suits Altra fans looking for variety in their rotation.
But if you're committed to barefoot running — no arch support, maximum ground feel, flexible soles — Topo Athletic isn't the answer. Xero Shoes, Vivobarefoot, or even Altra's lower-stack models like the Superior will serve you better.
