Take a quick 5-question quiz to identify the perfect minimal running shoe for your feet! You'll get both road and trail options based on your answers!
Xero Shoes Speed Force II
The closest thing to running barefoot—without actually being barefoot.
Technically released in late 2023, the Xero Shoes Speed Force II remains a standout choice for 2024.
Minimal in every sense of the word, this shoe is perfect for those disappointed by HFS II changes or anyone looking to train barefoot without fully committing to sandals or going barefoot.
Weighing just 6.5 oz and boasting a 4.5mm outsole, the Speed Force II offers unparalleled ground feel and flexibility.
Its design encourages natural foot movement, making it ideal for road running and barefoot training. While the toe box isn’t the widest on the market, most runners will find it adequate, especially when sizing up by half a size.
What I love about it:
- Its ultra-lightweight feel.
- Incredible flexibility that mimics barefoot movement.
- Pliable upper and excellent heel lockdown.
However, it’s not perfect for everyone. Those with exceptionally wide toe splay or who prefer a bit of cushion may find it less accommodating. But for me, it’s a fun, reliable addition to my rotation, and I plan to use it as long as it lasts!

Stack height: 4.5 – 7.5mm

Freet Feldom
The trail shoe that balances grip, durability, and flexibility.
This year was my first experience with Freet shoes, and the Feldom quickly became a staple in my trail running lineup.
Designed for wider feet, the Feldom offers a deep, roomy toe box and midfoot while maintaining excellent trail grip with its 4mm lugs.
The Feldom shines in versatility. Whether on dry rock, sticky mud, or hard-packed trails, it provides dependable traction. The semi-soft upper molds comfortably around the foot, while the shoe’s flexibility allows for natural movement across uneven terrain.
What I love about it:
- Spacious toe box that accommodates foot splay.
- Outstanding grip in various trail conditions.
- Lightweight at 260g, with a pseudo-cushioning effect from its lugs.
Its water-resistant upper is a double-edged sword—it’s great for wet conditions but can lead to overheating during long runs in warm weather. Durability is promising overall, though I’ll keep an eye on the inner lining as I continue to log miles. For wider, deeper feet, the Feldom is a fantastic all-rounder.

Altra Escalante Racer 2
A perfect balance of minimalism and cushion.
The Escalante Racer 2 may not be everyone’s favorite update, but I find it to be a fantastic addition for those seeking a cushioned yet flexible option.
With a 22mm stack height, it pairs beautifully with minimalist shoes like the Speed Force II, offering just enough cushion for faster paces or longer runs.
True to its heritage, the Escalante Racer 2 features Altra’s classic wide-toe box, allowing for optimal toe splay and flexion. The firmer midsole provides excellent ground feedback and stability, making it ideal for tempo runs or PR attempts.
What I love about it:
- Wide-toe box and forgiving depth for natural toe movement.
- Firm midsole that feels great for speed and responsiveness.
- Secure upper that reduces slipping during cornering or wet conditions.
While its midfoot fit may require some lace adjustments, and the exposed midsole rubber might wear faster, the Racer 2 has proven to be a reliable partner for both training and racing.

Altra King MT 2
Grip and protection for the toughest terrains.
The King MT 2 is a blast from the past, with Altra re-releasing this beloved design from 2019.
With its aggressive 6mm Vibram lugs and a low 19mm stack height, this shoe fills a gap in Altra’s trail lineup by providing unparalleled grip for rugged and muddy conditions.
This shoe excels in technical terrains where protection and traction are paramount. The power strap across the midfoot allows for customizable lockdown, particularly useful on steep descents.
Despite its dated upper design and narrower forefoot compared to other Altras, it remains a reliable choice for those seeking a tough, no-nonsense trail shoe.
What I love about it:
- Vibram outsole with aggressive lugs for exceptional grip.
- Rock plate for added protection on rocky trails.
- Adjustable power strap for tailored midfoot lockdown.
While the upper feels a bit bulky and the shoe runs short, sizing up resolves most fit issues. For muddy and alpine adventures, the King MT 2 has become my go-to.
